✿Music & Rituals✿
I'm pretty sure everyone has been to or has heard about a quinceanera. And no, not a quesadilla (which is an entree meal). If you've ever watched Austin & Ally, you know that there was an episode that one person of their friend group, Trish, had her own quince. If I'm not mistaken, her dress was a zebra print ball gown dress with pink detailing.
Typically, every Latina girl's dream is to have a quince as soon as they have their head around the party's concept. A quinceanera is a coming of age party when a girl turns 15. Its also another excuse to throw a big party and get glammed up. I know I was excited for my quinceanera. I was designing how I wanted my dress when I was 11 years old. Once it was closer to my quince, I knew that my family and I were stressing out. It's alot to plan for. You have to find venues (which luckily I didn't need to because we had it at my house since we have 14 acres of land), go dress shopping, finding your court of honor, setting up madrinas and padrinos for different key items at a quince, and so much more. I loved my quinceanera, but it did rain a little and we were all outside so that kind of sucked.
As you may know, music plays a big part in quinceaneras. There are different aspects of a quince that is accompanied by music like the entrance, father and daughter dance, and the suprise dance. I would show my quince dance videos, but I honestly don't know where any of the clips are :))). So, I'll just find some on Youtube.

My 2nd favorite dance/music for all of these is the entrance music. This is where people tend to put regular music and have the DJ (who, if you didn't know, will alwasy be extra and add echo effects to everything) announce the quinceanera's name, the parent's name, and all the names of the people in the court of honor.
No offense to that quinceanera, but I think that is SO boring. I like the ones where they have whole mariachis or bands playing. It just gives it a little more flavor. I also think that it just gets both the quinceanera and the guests hyped up for the party. It basically setsup the mood for everything. (I used mariachis for my entrance music)

The father and daughter is the one that always makes me cry and I dont know why. The songs are always sappy and about the little girl growing up. I feel like fathers don't show as much affection as they should, although I know they love their children. For my father and daughter dance, I used this song:
I won't translate the whole song, but in a nutshell, it talks about how the father was blessed to have the daughter and doesn't want her to grow up anymore. I'm glad that I got to dance with my dad to this song. (If you saw me crying while writing this post, no you didn't). But what breaks me even more is when daughters are put to dance with a picture of their late father.

Í don't want to dwell on that sad video, especially when I have to talk about the suprise dance. This is typically the most crazy/fun part of a quince (besides the caballo dorado dance, which if you don't know how to do, I HIGHLY recommend you learn):
But, surprise dances are just like it states, it's a surprise. There isn't a set song to play, but rather the quinceanera chooses it herself and makes it fun. Some people would use the harlem shake song (back when it was popular). Others use huapangos, bachata, or even hip hop. I didn't have a surprise dance since I only had one chambelan and I didn't want it to be akward.

Overall, music in quinceaneras are very improtant. It sets the mood for the party as well as make some people cry of pure joy or sadness. Going to a quinceanera is definitely something I want everyone to experience.✿

Sort of off topic, but my cousin's wife and her twin sister were on a show called Quiero Mis Quince (I want my 15). Sorry for the quality.
They now own their own lash company :)
Suddenly, I would like to attend a Quinceanera. I loved watching the videos you posted, they look so fun! The surprise dances are so fun to watch, especially because I can't dance to save my life so I admire those people. The father-daughter dance had me sobbing bro.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness a Quinceanera looks like so much fun and they are also adorable considering they are for when you are turning 15!! (When I 15 it didn't seem like I was young at all but now that I'm 19 it feels like that was forever ago and I was just a baby) Thank you for going so into detail about the dances and showing what they look liked. Personally, if I go to a gathering or party and there is a dance floor and barley anyone is dancing or on that floor, I will indeed be very upset. I can't dance good at all but if its good music and a bunch of other are around dancing I will for sure be out on that dance floor. That is also so cool to hear that about your cousin's wife!
ReplyDeleteThis is such an intricate blog post and I love how much you shared about your specific experience during your quinceanera! Like you said, I think the entrance music that involved the wider variety of instruments was definitely more entertaining to listen to. Also, the song you shared for your father and daughter dance is so beautiful. I don’t know the translations but just the music itself gives off a sense of love. Oh and the video you shared of the surprise dancing is so fun! I loved seeing the way that particular person incorporated such a wide variety of music into their dancing and it seemed like they were having such a good time.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved getting to read your blog! I have always been intrigued by quinceaneras and have always wondered what happened at one. The father daughter dance was specifically my favorite part of your blog! I feel like this is such a huge ritual that you could talk about for hours!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I've always wanted to go to one of these! The girls dresses are so beautiful and elegant! I really like how a quinceanera highlights a very changing time for girls (when I turned 15 I literally just got a happy birthday and went out to eat). But this sounds soooo much better! I also liked that you shared your personal experience! I wish we could've some videos though! But you looked gorgeous in your pictures!
ReplyDeleteHey Larissa! :) I have had a dream to also have a quinceanera. I love the beautiful dresses, joyous music, and meaning of the huge celebration. It was a great idea that you include pictures! Awesome job!
